BRCA Mutations Linked to Higher Risk of Rare T-Cell Lymphoma for Women With Breast Cancer With Textured Implants

By Melissa Badamo, Paola Ghione, MD, MSEpi - Last Updated: July 1, 2025

Women with breast cancer who received textured breast implants after a mastectomy and carried BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutations were 16 times more likely to develop breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL), a rare T-cell lymphoma, compared to women without these mutations.

Paola Ghione, MD, MSEpi, a Lymphoma Specialist at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and first author of the study published in Blood Advances, discusses these findings and how breast implant-associated ALCL is typically managed.
